31 imagesA celebrated singer and songwriter, Alejandro Escovedo has as eclectic a background and body of work as any rock artist of his generation. As comfortable performing with a string ensemble as he is with an amped-up power trio, and as likely to bare his soul in his lyrics as he is to display some serious rock & roll swagger, Escovedo had already played an important role in punk (with the Nuns), roots rock (the True Believers), and alt-country (Rank & File) before he launched a solo career that's seen him work with everyone from Tony Visconti, John Cale to Bruce Springsteen.

May 1978 In 1972, Aztec Two-Step, whose name comes from a poem by beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, burst upon the scene with their self-titled debut album on Elektra Records. Since then Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman have spent a lifetime making music together as the folk/rock duo Aztec Two-Step. Their first album, along with their subsequent albums for RCA Records were staples of progressive FM and college radio and helped to bring the folk/rock music of the 1960s into the 70s and beyond. As their recording career continued, so did the critical acclaim. Image of Rex and Neal Live In 1987 Living in America, received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album and was named in Billboard's year-end critic's poll. 44 imagesAnybody who's ever seen Beth Hart perform live or who's ever cranked up one of her albums knows she's for real. This woman sings from the depths of her soul, and her voice tells you stories and paints pictures that you just know have to be real... that come from real life and real experiences.?Beth started her career performing in the streets of L.A., sitting cross-legged with an acoustic guitar. And her first gigs were on the Chitlin' Circuit. It's in this world that Beth's fuse got lit. Fortunately for Beth, one of those people who heard her was David Wolff, who was instrumental in breaking Cyndi Lauper into superstardom. She got signed to Atlantic Records, and they were eager to work with her on first album, "Immortal". This record sold very well in the Eastern U.S. featuring the rockin' title track and the incredible soul anthem, "Am I The One". Her second album, "Screamin' For My Supper", a collaboration with her long-time bass player and ultimately, renowned producer, Tal Herzberg included more pop influences and yielded her Top 5 Adult Contemporary Hit, "L.A. Song (Out Of This Town)". In 2003, she released her 3rd album, "Leave The Light On," Billboard Magazine said, "One of the year's most affecting albums. The stuff of icons." 2004 sent her overseas to Holland and Denmark. Her 2005 release, "Live at Paradiso" captured one of her most electrifying performances in history, before a sold-out crowd at this Amsterdam landmark venue. From that moment on, she performed to sold-out audiences at concerts, festivals and clubs. And Europe has rewarded her with hits for "L.A. Song (Out Of This Town)", "Leave The Light On", "Good As It Gets", "Take It Easy On Me", "I'll Take Care Of You" (with Joe Bonamassa), "Your Heart Is As Black As Night" (with Joe Bonamassa) and "Sister". Slash (former lead guitar of the rock superband, Guns N' Roses) heard Beth. She recorded a song with him called "Mother Maria" which is on the iTunes version of his solo album, "Slash"."Jeff Beck, felt it right away and asked her to perform with him. She was the first lead singer to do a U.S. tour with Beck since Rod Stewart. And maybe her greatest collaboration has happened in the last year. She met Blues/Rock superstar guitarist, Joe Bonamassa, and they crafted a truly visionary album, "Don't Explain", produced by Kevin Shirley (producer for Led Zeppelin, Journey, Rush and Iron Maiden)."Don't Explain" and live gigs with Joe, the world has stood up and taken notice of Beth Hart. It has been nominated at the 23rd Blues Music Awards for "Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year". The Blues Rock Review has included the album in their "Top 20 Albums of 2011". "I'm so grateful, Man. I feel like I've arrived at a place where I'm really comfortable and ready to go all the way. I'm going to put my whole heart and soul into blowing European audiences away. And then I'd like to bring all that energy back to the U.S. and remind them where I came from."

65 images"Saw Beth Hart tonight at the Somerville Theater show, Saturday 2/27. Wow. This artist is seriously the real thing. She can rock hard like early Chrissie Hynde, coo and wail like Sinead O'Conner, then go sultry like Peggy Lee and roll all that together. And even that's unfair, cuz she really is her own thing. Her presence is exuberant, playful, angry, and deeply passionate in turn. The band behind her is talented, very tight, and unusually versatile. They can rock hard then lighten up whenever needed, turning on a dime. Well worth a close look." Mr. Ivories.

2 imagesBill Morrissey Boston Music Award for best folk recording, 1989, for Standing Eight, and 1992, for Inside. Grammy Award nomination for best traditional folk recording, 1993, for Friend of Mine. In 1991, Rounder Records re-released Morrissey's debut album on cd. Morrissey re-recorded the album, added three additional tracks that he'd been performing back when the album was originally released. In the liner notes, he noted, "I can't think of too many people who've gotten a chance to re-record their first album. It felt like a combination of getting to relive the innocence of my junior prom and returning to the scene of the crime to finish off the witness I'd only winged." Next came 'Inside'. Rolling Stone Reviewer Paul Evans called Inside "classic folk music, graced with an astonishingly subtle simplicity". "It confirms Morrissey's place in that noble lineage that reaches back to Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie--the troubadour as truth teller, conveying wisdom with absolute economy and focused fire." He is a unique talent. The truths he unearths aren't often pretty, but the way he tells them can take your breath away." His blue-collar vignettes are powerful ruminations on the complexity of the human experience. He feels for the troubled characters that roam across his lyric sheet, yet paints their portraits with an unsentimental eye. Often these characters are solitary figures. "I think when you travel for a living and you're always in somebody else's town, it's just something that I relate to, that I know, that I don't particularly like. It's a weird feeling. I remember in the early days what it was like to pull into some milltown bar where everybody knows everybody else, and you're performing there, and you're just sitting at the bar having a beer beforehand, and its like you're invisible. Everybody's chatting and laughing and having a good time, because they're all friends and know each other. And you're just the outsider. It's like you're the uninvited guest."

61 imagesOn July 23 one of our greatest singer songwriters/story-tellers, Bill Morrissey, pass away at the age of 59. I was fortunate to stumble into the New England folk world scene in the late 80's. "It was a time when Christine Lavin would hold September songwriter retreats on Martha's Vineyard and these young writers would hang out on a porch and write songs with the likes of Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk and Shel Silverstein, or be entertained by Cheryl Wheeler, Patty Larkin, John Gorka and Cliff Eberhardt simply being themselves. And in the center of that rich and fertile space of creativity stood Bill Morrissey. He was revered. He was studied. He was a kind and patient teacher of the supreme importance of words. Of tradition. Of art with purpose. Of writing truth instead of fact. But mostly he was a beloved friend. So that's the place I circled over since hearing the sad news. Back to that time of big dreams and endless possibilities; of community and creativity; of youth and lightness. All of you who were his friends, family and colleagues, please know you're in my heart." These photos, I hope, pay some sort of tribute to an incredible story teller, author and musician. 'Now the years and the faces blurs till I can't remember some There were women washing windows, there were salesgirls chewing gum There were voices in the shapes of old men kneeling in the pews There are things in this life a man just does not get to choose Finally I found a home in a tiny mountain town A simple place to keep me dry when the rains came pouring down A place to sleep, the rent was cheap, brick walls and a new slate roof The landlord said, 'You'll be safe here, this house is fireproof' ~Man From Out Of Town/Inside~1992

49 imagesBirds of Chicago have been riding a swell of good mojo in the Americana scene since their inception in 2012. Their new album, Love in Wartime, is built around the chemistry between Allison Russell and JT Nero, Nero, who writes the bulk of the songs, found himself a transcendent vocal muse in Russell (a powerful writer herself) The Birds consider themselves a rock and roll band first and foremost, and 'Love in Wartime' doesn’t leave any doubt about that. Says Nero, “a good show can send you back out into the night feeling -- for at least a little while - that everything isn’t broken.” These days, that’s no small thing.

20 imagesChapter Two. Be sure to check out the other chapters in the Bruce Springsteen Collection. >>To say that Bruce Springsteen saved the best for last for his third show in the Boston area this week would be selling short his two phenomenal nights at Fenway - there were far too many standout moments from those shows to say that Saturday's Gillette Stadium concert actually topped them. But you can say that last night's show was the tightest and hardest-rocking of the week, bringing together the best elements of each Fenway stop: the cohesive setlist and phenomenal pacing of night one with the jaw-dropping, unexpected detours of night two. 39 imagesChapter Four. Be sure to check out the other chapters in the Bruce Springsteen Collection. >>>>When Bruce Springsteen asked Boston's Fenway Park crowd who was seeing him and the E Street Band for the first time, a surprising number of hands went up. "The pressure's on!" he declared. He needn't have worried. One can only assume the newbies in the crowd went home in awe that the 62-year-old Springsteen had managed to live up to his billing and then some, barnstorming through a 3 1/2-hour set that energized the Fenway crowd from start to finish. What's perhaps even more remarkable is that Springsteen and the band also managed to match his own high standards set through decades of memorable Boston shows. While it may have traded some of the raw emotion of March's TD Garden concert for a house-party vibe more appropriate for the venue, Tuesday's show spotlighted Springsteen's energy and his band's versatility as well as any Beantown show in recent memory. ~~~~~Many Thanks to the Pete Chianca for his support and most excellent writing.~~~~~ Read more: Blogness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen http://blogs.wickedlocal.com/springsteen/#ixzz23lHXexcR

Dawes is part of the Laurel Canyon sound, which often cites influences such as Crosby, Stills, and Nash and Neil Young, among others. At the invitation of producer Jonathan Wilson, the band joined a local informal jam session that included Conor Oberst, The Black Crowes's Chris Robinson, and Benmont Tench. The band recorded their debut album, North Hills, in Laurel Canyon in a live setting to analog tape, resulting in a sound that Rolling Stone magazine called "authentically vintage". Wilco multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone is also credited with appearing on the release. Dawes released their second album, Nothing Is Wrong, on June 7, 2011 and toured the US co-headlining with Blitzen Trapper. The band made their television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on April 14, 2010.

Spalding's journey as a solo artist began with debut recording released in May 2008, 'Esperanza', went on to become the best selling album by a new jazz artist internationally in 2008. The New York Times raved, "Esperanza has got a lot: accomplished jazz improvisation, funk, scat singing, Brazilian vernacular rhythm and vocals in English, Portuguese and Spanish. At its center is a female bassist, singer and bandleader, one whose talent is beyond question." Esperanza went straight to the top of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart where it remained for over 70 weeks. On Februrary 13th 2011 in Los Angeles, Esperanza received one of the music industry's most prestigious prizes, the Grammy for Best New Artist. 2/012 brings a very busy spring and summer, touring again in Europe and North America, Esperanza has been touring behind her new album, Radio Music Society released this past March.

39 images"I feel like we've been pushed along on a wave of wonderful feeling" Thus was Tom Chaplin's description at the end of their show Tuesday, June 12th 2012, at the House of Blues. Tom Chaplin and his bandmates had flown in from England the night before for their tour opening performance in Boston. He went on to say the warmth of the packed house made the band "deliriously happy." Keane played an energetic and lengthy, hour-and-45-minute set. Chaplin's infectious enthusiasm and the band's, led by Tim Rice-Oxley, tight interplay was as good a performance as I have seen. The band's catalog of driving piano-driven pop was played with crispness and passion by bassist Jesse Quin, keyboardist and chief songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley, and drummer Richard Hughes. The 22-song setlist covered all four of the band's albums. Anthems like "Somewhere Only We Know", "Bend and Break" and the eruptive "Spiralling," to tender ballads like "The Starting Line" and the gently surging "Sea Fog," which showcased Chaplin's voice. The ovations at the end of the show was quite moving for Chaplin and Rice-Oxley. It can be seen in several of the photos near the end of the album.

17 images" Lorde could’ve easily moved her Friday show at the Orpheum Theatre to a much larger venue. Thanks to the smash success of her single “Royals,” its recent high-profile win at the Grammy Awards for song of the year, and the ubiquity of current hit single “Team,” the singer-songwriter has soared to stardom in less than a year. Lorde has enjoyed the rare success that includes both commercial good fortune and critical acclaim for her 2013 debut album, “Pure Heroine.” But the teenager from New Zealand — born Ella Yelich-O’Connor — wisely chose to keep her original booking and the intimate environs of the Orpheum made for a much more special show than any arena would have allowed . And as remarkably poised as she is, it also allowed Lorde to find her way in front of a fewer eyes and strategically build demand for her return." Sarah Rodman Boston Globe

74 imagesTribute to Levon Helm ~By Stacey Anderson~ Levon Helm's musical legacy revealed itself to be in good hands on Wednesday night at Love for Levon - the collaborative evening of covers raised funds to help Helm's family to retain ownership of his home and converted-barn studio in Woodstock, New York. Love for Levon also served as a financial and symbolic continuation of Helm's famous Midnight Rambles, the campfire-style jams he established in his studio for talented folk, country and rock musicians. Fittingly, the evening shared the affectionate give-and-take ethos that made the Rambles so legendary: egos were nonexistent, vocals readily shared, lengthy solos undemanded. The singer and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell served as master of ceremonies; he led the Levon Helm Band, a revolving ensemble of 12-odd brass, keys, strings, and percussion players and introduced most of the guest stars. Garth Hudson, the Band's influential organist, received a standing ovation from much of the room as he pounded keys for "Little Birds". He was accompanied by John Prine and the Levon Helm Band for "When I Paint My Masterpiece." Their heartfelt, drawling call-and-response soon found folksy kinship in Jakob Dylan's raspy spin through "Ain't Got No Home". Lucinda Williams' vocals on "Whispering Pines" drew goosebumps, and Grace Potter's effortlessly controlled soar through "I Shall Be Released" tumbled steadily toward a devastating climax of vibrato and smashing piano. Ray La Montagne and John Mayer delivered a beatifically understated "Tears of Rage". Eric Church offered his solid twang to the Helm rarity "A Train Robbery". Church also covered "Get Up Jake". After a blazing, funk-laden "Up on Cripple Creek" by Joe Walsh and Robert Randolph, My Morning Jacket lent ear-rattling, sax-heavy squalor to "Ophelia" and "It Makes No Difference" before Roger Waters joined them onstage. The smiling Pink Floyd singer was clad in black yet toting a battered, bright red baseball cap, which he hung immediately from his microphone stand. After he and MMJ drove "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" into fine country-psych lather, Waters explained his prop: Helm had given it to him after they performed together in the historic "The Wall: Live in Berlin" concert after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, and Waters vowed that he would keep it close "until the day I die." He and Amy Helm (Levon's daughter and a soulful, bluegrass-inflected singer in her own right) then delivered a lovely, elegiac duet on "Wide River to Cross." By the cinematic ensemble closing of "The Weight," during which every performer of the night stuffed the stage, the room pulsed with familial goodwill. It was appropriately similar to the benevolent mood of The Last Waltz, the Band's spirited swan song - and with Waters' scarlet hat resting prominently on the central microphone, a spotlight lending it soft glow, the evening seemed far more a promise to Helm than a farewell to him.

26 imagesBoston was in the midst of a huge winter northeaster storm, one that brought epic tides and flooding to the entire region. As a result, schools, work and venues shut their doors. But not The Royale in Boston. The sidewalks were lined up with people waiting for the doors to open, driving rain and cold were no match for this enthusiastic group of LP fans. The anticipation was palpable. No, on this night, Laura Pergolizzi aka LP performed a show as cathartic as any I have witnessed. From the opening notes of 'Strange' I knew I was hearing something wonderfully unique, emotionally powerful and joyously felt. The crowd sat, danced, sang and basked in the energy, the emotion and the beauty that radiated from LP. She was dressed in a fashion that reminded this writer 67' Bob Dylan, 73' Bruce Springsteen and 78' Patti Smith. Singing, playing guitar, ukulele and harmonica, she commanded the stage, prowling across it, getting as close as she could to as many as she could. She and the band worked so hard for the audience and yet it seemed so effortless. Beginning to End...this show was an invitation to hear, see and feel the music from an artist who has mined a vein of emotion and passion that one can only hope continues spread and deepen.

38 imagesDenver-based indie group The Lumineers is touring North America in support of their self-titled debut album and that included a stop at the House of Blues on Monday night. The Lumineers broke onto the scene in 2012 with the smash hit "Ho Hey", which has gotten them all the way to the GRAMMYS. This year's star-studded 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards already boasts an all-star line-up of performers including Mumford and Sons, and it was recently announced that the Lumineers will also lend their talents to the proceedings. When The Lumineers attended the GRAMMY Nominations concert last month in Nashville there were a few clues that led them to believe they might receive a nomination. "We were at the nominations ceremony and we found out because there was someone with a camera right in our face right before they nominated us," Wesley Schultz confessed. "So we were pretty sure that we were in that category at that point because they had us sitting in the audience." They are nominated as Best New Artist and Best Americana Album. "If we win a GRAMMY we will have the worst speech in GRAMMY history because we're not really expecting to win," Wesley admitted. "We're pretty honored to be nominated and that's pretty shocking in and of itself.

28 imagesNeedtobreathe delivered a performance last night at the Boston House of Blues that was equal to any show I have seen and surpassed most. They are that good. This tour is backing their newest release 'The Reckoning' and like it's namesake, this band demands your attention and utmost respect. The show was a locomotive of charging rockers, soulful ballads and musicianship that were both calming and invigorating at the same time. Stellar performances of "Oohs And Ahhs", "Drive All Night,", "The Outsiders" and "Washed By The Water" are just a few of the highlights. The band, Bear Rinehart (vocals, guitar, piano) - Bo Rinehart (guitar, backing vocals) - Seth Bolt (bass, backing vocals) - Joe Stillwell (drums, backing vocals) are from rural South Carolina. They are not new, having produced four CD and EPs, toured with the likes Train, Collective Soul, Taylor Swift and performing at Bonnaroo. "We've always bought into the fact that anything worth having is going to cost you a lot, so I think we were prepared to lose everything. The Reckoning is our investigation into everything we believed to be true and a justification for everything we still do."

24 imagesThe name of the tour is 'Truth About Love', the real name of the performer is Alecia Beth Moore and the reality of it all is that P!NK is now the best live performer in the industry....no other comparisons. Soaring power, growling sensuality, friendly banter and a command of her music and the crowd from beginning to end. I wish I could say that I knew what to expect from this show, but I didn't. Other than her power ballad duet with Nate Ruess on 'Just Give Me A Reason', I could not say I knew any of her songs. However, I left this show with a satisfaction and awe that I had not experienced since seeing Bruce Springsteen in 1978. I knew more of his music at that time than I did going into P!NKs concert on this night, but I came out just as exhausted and exhilarated. What a performance! The physicality, the exuberance and the passion of this show places it among the highlights of shows I have seen the past forty years. The Truth About Love is that P!NK is a performer I cannot wait to see again.

32 imagesNamed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all-time and the recent recipient of both an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriting and the 2006 BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, the iconic British folk rock legend is one of the world's most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. His work is admired and recorded by such artists as Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne and Elvis Costello. From his teenage years as a founding member of the 1960's pioneering group Fairport Convention to duo work with his then-wife, Linda Thompson, and over 20 years as a solo artist, to scoring Werner Hertzog's 2005 documentary 'Grizzly Man', Richard Thompson's astounding body of work includes over 40 albums of lyrical wit anchored by such a singular acoustic and electric guitar delivery that Newsweek recently announced, 'like all genuine art, it satisfies completely.'

12 imagesSlash Featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators brought the house down last night (August 2) at The House of Blues in Boston to celebrate the release of their new album 'Apocalyptic Love.' It was truly a rock 'n' roll party as Slash took the stage with his signature top hat and sunglasses opening with 'Halo'. During the course of the night, Myles Kennedy belted out some Velvet Revolver tunes such as 'Dirty Little Thing' and 'Slither, Slash shredded it up like no one else and mesmerized the crowd with his blistering solos all night long. If that wasn't enough, fans also got a special treat with performances of Guns N' Roses 'Sweet Child O' Mine' and the set closer 'Paradise City.' Throughout the set, Myles Kennedy proved that he's one of the most powerful rock singers around today.

35 imagesFrom Brett Milano "Bristols; Kelly Knapp: lead vocals, guitar, sitar Kim Ernst: bass guitar, vocals Michele Haber: lead guitar Johnny Grady: drums The Bristols The Bristols' place in Boston music history is real. As one of only a few all-girl bands in the mid 80's, they somehow got through two decades without releasing a note of music-not even a demo track on some out-of-print vinyl compilation. Learning from and mentored by local luminaries such as Elliot Easton, Jonathan Paley & Billy Borgioli, (to name a few) the Bristols were way ahead of at least two trends; '60s pop revival and alt-country. For me, they settled the tired old "Can women rock?" question by rocking first and asking questions later. The group got close to a record deal more than once, and along the way, they threw out more good songs than most bands ever write I got crushed on the Bristols pretty early-a lot of people did-and it was their rock'n'roll hearts that did it. Originally they looked and sounded like a mid-60's dream come to life: Kim had hair like Jeannie Shrimpton back in 1965 (yes, the Smithereens' song was written about her); and the harmonies were straight from Shangri-La. And although Kelly's sultry voice was tinged with twang, there was an underlying toughness there as well, most notably when Michele reached for her volume pedal. Along with some of their local running partners-the Titanics and the Neats especially- they really found their voice after turning it up. Those are the Bristols I remember most fondly-the hazy, high-volume nights at the Rat or Bunratty's, where they'd come on between the 'Hoods, the Nervous Eaters, or the Real Kids, match them for volume but hit you with something lonesome and heartfelt between the lines. And their annual Patriot's Day afternoon shows at the Rat were legendary and something to look forward to until '97, when our beloved scene began to change forever. Over the years the face behind the drum-kit changed and by their third drummer in the early 90's, they were no longer strictly a "girl group". In 1994, Johnny Grady was recruited from renowned Boston band The 360's. Johnny added a long sought after heaviness to the band's sound and would remain the Bristols' final drummer. Kelly sings & plays in her country band The Darlings, and the three women were more inseparable than most active bands." These photographs are in loving memory of Michelle Haber~RIP 2023.

59 imagesThe Gaslight Anthem is an American rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, consisting of Brian Fallon (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Rosamilia (guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion). They released their first album, Sink or Swim, on XOXO Records in May 2007, and their second album, The '59 Sound, on SideOneDummy Records in August 2008. The band's third album, American Slang, was released on June 15, 2010. [T]he Gaslight Anthem is part of a rich tradition of New Jersey punk, spanning the Misfits to the Bouncing Souls." The Gaslight Anthem's music also embraces many elements of the Jersey Shore sound. Brian Fallon's fondness for Springsteen, a significant influence on their music, is a fact celebrated by fans and critics alike. However the band claims they never set out to sound like the New Jersey icon. Representative of such views, one critic wrote, "The Gaslight Anthem are like something out of speculative fiction: this is what pop music would be if Springsteen hadn't listened to his producer, let The Ramones record Hungry Heart, and launched the C.B.G.B.'ers into megastardom.". Drummer Benny Horowitz and guitarist Alex Rosamilia stated that "We're more Bruce Springsteen appreciators. We didn't start listening to him until we joined the band. I always liked his songs when I heard them, but I wasn't a big fan until I met Brian [Fallon]." Following the release of their third full-length album, American Slang, Fallon himself said, "There's so much else that we look at for our sound and influences that you don't want to be notched in with one guy," Fallon explains. "There's a lot of things [Springsteen] does that I admire. We come from a lot of the same places but a lot of different places, too. But at the same time, that's a good thing to be compared to. I think it's one of those things we're gonna have to wear until it wears out." Of the Springsteen comparisons, Rosamilia also added, "I think there's enough out there on the Internet about that already." Joe Strummer has often been spoken about and referenced by lead singer Brian Fallon and the song "I'da Called You Woody, Joe," is a tribute to the legendary Clash frontman. Fallon has a tattoo of Strummer. As stated in multiple interviews with members of the band, there is an influence of the motown genre. This influence was exemplified and magnified on the album The '59 Sound. Brian Fallon has stated several times that without The Replacements there would be no Gaslight Anthem, as they are heavily influenced by them, especially their song 'Left of the Dial'.

Edinburgh, London, Dublin, Spiddal, New York, and Findhorn have all served as homes for the group. The band has played in a number of different styles, but their music is a mix of Celtic folk music with rock and roll. Mike Scott and The Waterboys either influenced or was used to describe a number of other bands, including Simple Minds, The Alarm, In Tua Nua, Big Country, the Hothouse Flowers[5] and World Party, the last of which was made up of former Waterboys members.

32 imagesMatt Lee of the Boston Globe writes " WBCN may have been known as the "Rock of Boston," but it was folk artist Tom Rush who captured the impact of the radio station when he played the traditional "Wasn't That a Mighty Storm" Monday night at the House of Blues in a multigenre musical love letter to the early days of the renegade broadcast outlet. The four-hour concert celebrated the initial fund-raising drive for production of "The American Revolution" and raised more money for the documentary about the station due out next year. Rush and a folk ensemble that included Spider John Koerner, Jon Pousette-Dart, Jonathan Edwards, Kate Taylor, Livingston Taylor, and Steve Mayone began the show with a spirited song circle that tapped not only tradition but also anthems that bubbled up in the era, songs such as Edwards's "Sunshine" and "Shanty" and Pousette-Dart's "County Line." The acoustic set reminded of how WBCN blossomed at a time when rock and folk were on equal footing in the counterculture that embraced the fledgling broadcast outlet. That sense of diversity within a like-minded community rippled through the concert even as it went electric. James Montgomery, who led a rocking blues band that backed many of the night's performers, said that celebrating WBCN was akin to celebrating "a culture, a community where people cared about each other." Billy Squier, who closed the main set, recalled growing up in Wellesley and listening to Peter Wolf deejay from "the college of musical knowledge," surmising that some on stage that night may not have been there without that education. The free-form nature of early 'BCN came across in a show that spanned the soul of Al Kooper's teaming with the Uptown Horns to the frivolity of the Fools singing "Life Sucks, Then You Die." It was a night when Willie Alexander's underground anthem "Mass Ave" was home with "More Than a Feeling" and medley of other monster hits performed by former members of the band Boston. The show offered both homegrown hits, such as Robin Lane singing "When Things Go Wrong," and enduring native talent such as Montgomery, Kooper, Charlie Farren, Johnny A., Jon Butcher, and all of their band members. Longtime 'BCN morning man Charles Laquidara addressed the crowd a few times, but saved his biggest surprise for the finale when he filled the stage with on-air talent from throughout the station's run from 1968 to 2009 and had that choir tackle Cream's "I Feel Free," the first song WBCN broadcast. It was perfectly off the rails".
